Reconcile SMTP.com delivery reports with application sends
Use sender-scoped reporting to track bounces and delivery evidence without polling blindly or confusing outbound feedback with incoming mail.
Reviewed
Make delivery reporting part of the integration before a critical workflow depends on it. SMTP/API acceptance does not guarantee a recipient mailbox accepted or displayed the message.
Establish a correlation record
- Persist the application operation, sender/channel, intended recipient, and submission time before sending.
- Retain available provider message/request identifiers and the parsed application result.
- Use the reporting resources currently documented for your account in SMTP.com’s API guide.
- Record delivery, permanent failure, complaint, and unknown states separately instead of collapsing all successful requests into “delivered.”
If adopting a webhook/integration offered for your account, verify its actual authentication and payload contract first; this guide does not assume an undocumented universal webhook or MailKite signature scheme.
Bound polling and recovery
Use reporting permission appropriate to the sender/account and a bounded query schedule with rate-limit handling. Reconcile only the necessary interval/identities and preserve suppression decisions against late updates.
Test a controlled send, a documented failure case, and duplicate processing. An uncertain send result should reach an investigation path rather than automatically triggering a second submission.
Outgoing reports are not incoming customer replies. If the application needs a reply inbox, use an explicit mailbox or receiving service such as a separately verified MailKite address. Keep its incoming event identities and security controls distinct from SMTP.com delivery evidence.
