Deploy Modoboa with an explicit mail-stack topology

Choose automatic installation or integration with existing services and keep administration distinct from SMTP and mailbox delivery.

Reviewed

Modoboa is a hosting/administration platform around mail components, not an SMTP daemon by itself. Its automatic installer can assemble a complete stack; a manual deployment must connect the surrounding services deliberately.

If you are deciding between an administration layer and an integrated server, see Modoboa in our Linux mail-server comparison.

Choose the installation model

  1. Review Modoboa’s documentation and current system requirements.
  2. For a new clean host, follow the automatic installer guide. It currently limits the automatic path to supported Debian-based systems.
  3. For existing Postfix/Dovecot infrastructure, follow manual integration instead of running an installer over live configuration.
  4. Secure the administrative account, TLS, database access, and management networking before provisioning real users.

Review any installer before privileged execution and record its selected components. A Django web service becoming reachable does not establish that SMTP and mailbox delivery are configured correctly.

Verify each service boundary

Create one controlled domain/mailbox and test administration, receipt, mailbox access, and authenticated submission independently. Inspect the underlying mail logs and reject unauthorized relay.

Keep existing production MX until tests and backups pass. Do not describe the management REST API as a generic send-mail API unless the specific supported endpoint/extension is documented. Extra components, extensions, and edition-specific features need their own supported setup and recovery plan.
